Quotable Sunday - On Winter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Greetings friends and welcome to this edition of Quotable Sunday. Today I have selected quotes on winter. It is not my favorite season. I generally dread the cold and gray months between Christmas and Easter.

Around here there is little snow, just cold, damp bleakness. Today, we are fortunate to have sun to take the edge off of the chill. Though the winter months sometimes leave me feeling empty, a few of these quotes reminded me that beauty is everywhere...if you have the right perspective.

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius. ~Pietro Aretino

The tendinous part of the mind, so to speak, is more developed in winter; the fleshy, in summer. I should say winter had given the bone and sinew to literature, summer the tissues and the blood. ~John Burroughs

Brew me a cup for a winter's night.
For the wind howls loud and the furies fight;
Spice it with love and stir it with care,
And I'll toast our bright eyes,
my sweetheart fair.
~Minna Thomas Antrim

Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories. ~From the movie An Affair to Remember

Winter is nature's way of saying, "Up yours." ~Robert Byrne

Every mile is two in winter. ~George Herbert

Winter came down to our home one night
Quietly pirouetting in on silvery-toed slippers of snow,
And we, we were children once again.
~Bill Morgan, Jr.

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~Ruth Stout

When the bold branches
Bid farewell to rainbow leaves -
Welcome wool sweaters.
~B. Cybrill

I was just thinking, if it is really religion with these nudist colonies, they sure must turn atheists in the wintertime. ~Will Rogers

Winter dies into the spring, to be born again in the autumn. ~Marche Blumenberg

Every winter,
When the great sun has turned his face away,
The earth goes down into a vale of grief,
And fasts, and weeps, and shrouds herself in sables,
Leaving her wedding-garlands to decay -
Then leaps in spring to his returning kisses.
~Charles Kingsley

Awesome subject!
I am the opposite though, I dislike Summer far more than winter, but I also live where it never snows - so what's not to love... ?

Visiting from Low Expectations.
Have a great day!

I feel the same way about winter, always seems too long and of course too cold!
You're quotes are really good!
I'll be good now for a while with winter.
This quote is from one of my fav. movies so I'll pick it this week!
Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories. ~From the movie An Affair to Remember

Tired of the winter here too!!
I like this one:
Winter came down to our home one night
Quietly pirouetting in on silvery-toed slippers of snow,
And we, we were children once again.

The winter and cold seem to bug my children much less than me!
