Friday Photo Journal - February 28, 2014

Thursday, February 27, 2014

So glad it's Friday! This week has gone by quickly, and I am pleased that I managed to get quite a bit of work done - including finalizing my tax reports for my first full year in business. That's a relief and also quite depressing to see the bottom line in black and white - or should I say black and red - ha ha.  I worked my tail off last year and have hardly a dime to show for it. Owning a small business is not for the weak-hearted!
Anyway, looking forward to the weekend and a little down time with my peeps!

TGIF! - It's been a week. A real week, I tell ya. That's all I'll say about that. Anyway, we had a lovely warm up in weather mid-week and my favorite images this week were taken outside with my DSLR, rather than my iPhone. I love how carefree my girl is - chocolate-stained face, shoes on the wrong feet, wild-haired - a beautiful mess. These fill my heart with joy!

Friday Photo Journal - February 14, 2014

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you all have a day filled with love and happy memories. Just sharing a another snow pic - so tired of snow. It was pretty while it lasted, but I'd much prefer sunshine. :) The littles, and the pooch, had to go out and play in it for a bit. We had gorgeous, great big flakes that accumulated to about 2 inches, and then the rains came…and haven't left.

Wishing you all sunshine and warmth for the weekend - if not from Mother Nature then from those you hold dear.

Little Things and A Little Snow

Today a little snow quietly fell and blanketed our world. It was quiet and peaceful and lovely. And then it washed away.

Friday Photo Journal - Link Up 2/7/14

Thursday, February 6, 2014

Happy Friday friends! I hope you have had a great week. I only have one photo to share today. I have been caught up in work and don't have many images from this week that I haven't already shared. This pic is of Little Miss as she heard a train blow it's horn. She was pretty excited, but quickly let down when she realized we wouldn't be able to see it from our street. I love that I caught her expression. ;)

Settings: ISO3200, f/2.8 1/160 sec with 70-200 mm at 70 mm

WW - Snow Bunny

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

We sure enjoyed the snow while it lasted. It has all melted now and we're back to cold, damp, gray days. Sigh. I hope that ground hog was wrong.

Since so many of my visitors are photography enthusiasts, I thought I would make a better effort to include my camera settings with my images.  I know I am often curious about the settings when I visit other photographers. So, here they are, in case you are curious - this image was shot with a Nikon D610 and 50 mm 1/4 lens:

Playing With Light - Rembrandt Lighting

Monday, February 3, 2014

As my sessions have slowed a bit, I have been trying to practice more, so that I can better utilize light in my images and also use it more effectively to evoke mood. To that end, I set up my backdrop in the garage this weekend (to hide the clutter) and used side window light to create a Rembrandt lighting scenario. Fortunately my kids were intrigued by the back drop and agreed to sit in for a shot or two. It was a pretty simple set up. I just positioned them about 4 feet in front of the back drop and about 5 feet away from the window. I had them sit, to keep them still, and pointed to where I needed them to look in order to create a balance of light and shadow on their faces. I love the dramatic effect. I then played with adding a little fill light by using a reflector opposite of the window, to bounce a little light back toward them.

Here's what I got - this was just for practice to ignore the wardrobe and chair - not my first choices for a portrait of this nature. ;)

I used my 50 mm lens, not a true portrait lens, but I was working in a confined space. My setting were ISO 160, f/2.8 and 1/100 Sec. I metered off the highlight cheek and did underexpose by about 1/3 stop because I liked the look better. When the meter read 0, I felt the highlights were too bright. I didn't do much in post processing, just pulled down the highlights and shadows a bit and sharpened for the web.

I also used my new Expo disc for a custom white balance - that thing rocks! Not all of the images I created qualify for true Rembrandt light (notice the shadow in the first image is not deep enough) but I was going for something both natural looking and dramatic, and I was pleased with the effect.

This was a fun exercise and I will definitely try it again and play more with composition and subject orientation.  I also have been working more with Off Camera Flash and trying to get a better handle on using it effectively. There is always more to learn! What is your favorite lighting technique?
