Hey Mom, Feeling Stuck? A Guest Post By Lynn Banis

Monday, June 28, 2010

Anybody in this bloggy world feeling stuck? Unfortunately getting stuck happens frequently to Moms who are trying so hard to be all things to all people. One big reason is that we start to let ourselves be defined by our roles. Think of all the roles you play – mom, wife, housekeeper, chef, taxi driver, financial manager, gardener, medic, school teacher, disciplinarian, etc., etc., etc. You are all of those things and more.

We get stuck when we allow ourselves to be defined by the various roles we play rather than by who we are at the core. Each time we make a mistake or fall down in one of our roles we feel defeated – like a failure in all things. That simply is not true.

We also get so caught up in trying to do all things well that we begin to feel like a piece of Swiss cheese with everyone taking a big bite out of us all the time. No wonder we don’t feel whole or centered! We are stuck trying to be everything to everybody and that is just not humanly possible.

Take a step back. What have you lost of yourself trying to be Super-Mom? What kinds of stresses are you letting yourself experience? You have a choice. You can opt for the run-full-
out-exhaust-yourself Mom role or you can adapt the I-am-fullfilled-and-centered-relaxed Mom role.

Here are some quick steps to take to get yourself back in control and out of stuck places:
1. Check those should, oughts and musts. Don’t let them rule your life.
2. Practice “How can I?” not “I can’t!” thinking.
3. Identify and stick to your core values.
4. Decide what can be done 80% and let that be sufficient.
5. Set boundaries. What are you willing to do? What will you give up? What will you gain by setting boundaries? How will you keep your boundaries intact? What will you do when your boundaries are crossed? Who can support you in keeping your boundaries?

These are just a few steps you can take immediately. Next week I will take you a bit deeper into getting unstuck. In the meantime, if you are interested in pursuing this, you can get my ebook, “The Top 5 Ways to Quickly Get Unstuck” at http://stores.lulu.com/store.phpfAcctID=52435493.

Until then, be good to yourself –you are worth it!

Quotable Sunday - Butterflies

Sunday, June 27, 2010

The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough. ~Rabindranath Tagore

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun
And find your shoulder to light on,
To bring you luck, happiness and riches
Today, tomorrow and beyond.
~Irish Blessing

Butterflies are self propelled flowers. ~R.H. Heinlein

If nothing ever changed, there'd be no butterflies. ~Author Unknown

What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly. ~Richard Bach

But these are flowers that fly and all but sing:
And now from having ridden out desire
They lie closed over in the wind and cling
Where wheels have freshly sliced the April mire.
~Robert Frost, "Blue-Butterfly Day"

They seemed to come suddenly upon happiness as if they had surprised a butterfly in the winter woods. ~Edith Wharton

With the rose the butterfly's deep in love,
A thousand times hovering round;
But round himself, all tender like gold,
The sun's sweet ray is hovering found.
~Heinrich Heine, "New Spring"

"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower." ~Hans Christian Anderson

Love is like a butterfly: It goes where it pleases and it pleases wherever it goes. ~Author Unknown

Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life. And everyone deserves a little sunshine. ~Jeffrey Glassberg

Cool As A Cuke Summer Pasta Salad Recipe

Saturday, June 26, 2010

I love a good barbeque, but let's face it, some days it's just too hot to grill. That's why I love having recipes for fresh salads and simple sandwiches on hand for those hot summer nights when grilling just seems like punishment. And, after a long day on the beach when everyone is wiped out, having a cool  salad waiting in the fridge can keep the crankies at bay.

I'm more of a throw it all together kinda gal, than a recipe follower. I like to look at a cookbook or website for ideas and then make my own concoction. I've come up with some great dishes this way...only problem is, sometimes I can't replicate them exactly, lol. Still, it's the method that works best for me, and I try to write down the good ones before I forget. Here's a recipe for a cucumber pasta salad that I whipped up last week. It got two thumbs up at our house, so I think it's a keeper. Keep in mind that I eyeball rather than measure, so less is more if you are unsure of proportions. It's always easier to add then take away!

Cool As A Cuke Summer Pasta Salad:
1 box of your favorite pasta, cooked according to box directions, drained and cooled
1 med cucumber, diced (I like the English variety)
1 small or half a large sweet red pepper, diced
3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, diced and sauteed in your favorite Light Italian dressing (about 1/2 cup tossed over chicken) then drained after cooking
1/2 cup bacon pieces (I use Hormel's)
1/3 cup light mayo (I like Duke's)
2/3 cup Creamy Cucumber salad dressing (This can be hard to find. Kraft makes one and so does Kroger Brand.)
1/3 cup light sour cream

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and chill for about 1 hour before serving. This can be made a day ahead and will taste even better the longer the flavors blend. I realize in the photo my cuke's aren't exactly diced, more like a chunk...feel free to improvise :)

I hope you enjoy this summer salad. Let me know what you think! If you like this one, check out the  Perfect Potato Salad recipe at The Simple Gourmand. It's a fave of mine.

Aloha Friday

Friday, June 25, 2010

Aloha bloggy friends! Welcome to this edition of Aloha Friday fun! I hope that you have all had a great week, and managed to stay cool. It topped 105 degrees here yesterday, yikes!

On to my question of the week...I recently discovered Hendrickson's Original Sweet Vinegar and Olive Oil Dressing & Marinade and I'm totally hooked. This stuff is soooo good and virtually fat free! It's the perfect topping for a fresh summer salad, and a great marinade for cucumbers & tomatoes, pasta salad or even grilled chicken. I just love it. It's my new favorite thing. Have you ever tried it? It's been around for years, but I just happened upon it at the grocery store a couple of weeks ago. Where has this stuff been all my life? Think of all the calories I could have been saving on Reduced Fat Ranch, lol!

My question to you is: What's your new favorite thing?

Aloha Friday

Friday, June 18, 2010

Aloha everyone! Happy Friday :) I'm excited to have a big weekend ahead. My niece is graduating from high school Saturday and we'll have lots of family in town visiting. And let's not forget Father's Day...this year I'll actually get to enjoy time with my own dad and my hubbie on the same day! I don't think I've ever spent a Father's Day with the two of them together before.

So, my question for today is: How do you plan to celebrate Father's Day?

Whatever you do, I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Thanks for stopping by. Check out this post for some Dad's Day ideas. And don't forget to visit An Island Life for more Aloha Friday fun.

Make Something Special for Dad for Father's Day

Thursday, June 17, 2010

First, a little history (I am a homeschool mom after all!): Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington.

Father's Day is just around the corner. Do you have a special day planned for Dad?

I've gathered some fun ideas for getting the kids involved in making Dad's day a big hit! You'll find crafts, cards, recipes and more at these sites:
A Kids' Heart
Kaboose - love the trophy :)
Family Fun
Holidays.net
The Holiday Spot
Activity Village - love the oragami :)

And here's a link to Presidential Father's Day Proclamations from 2009, back through the year 2000.

What Makes a Dad?

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagles in flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
And there was nothing more to add,
He knew his masterpiece was complete,
And He called it – Dad.

Celebrate Flag Day June 14th

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Flags have powerful connotations. The colors of a flag and symbols on a flag have great meaning for those who proudly fly it.

Called the "Stars and Stripes," or "Old Glory," the American flag is one of the most complicated in the world. Did you know that is takes 64 pieces of fabric to make an American Flag? The current flag has 13 red and white alternating stripes which represent the original 13 states and 50 stars which represents the states of the Union on a blue background.

Another interesting fact about the American flag is that it has changed designs more than any other flag in the world. The first flag, called the Grand Union, was flown at the headquarters of the Continent Army on January 1, 1776. Betsy Ross is said to have contributed to this design. The legend goes that she showed George Washington how to make a five-pointed star and suggested thirteen stars in a circle for the first flag.

National flags are not merely symbols of a country. Flags have powerful connotations.
We Americans take the treatment of our flag seriously. There is a code of ethics for the use of the American Flag that includes rules such as:

The national flag cannot be used for advertising.
It must not be folded while being displayed.
The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.
No one should write on an American flag.
It cannot cover a monument or any ceilings.
The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress proposed that the United States have a national flag instead of the British Union Jack. Until 1877 there were few public ceremonies honoring the Stars and Stripes, when on, June 14, it was flown from every government building in honor of the centennial of the adoption of a national flag. In 1890, North Dakota and New Jersey made a law that required schools to fly the flag daily. The first official Flag Day was observed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1893. New York also proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day 1897, though other states were slow to follow.

In August 1949, President Harry S. Truman proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. From then on the President has proclaimed the commemoration yearly. Many Americans display the Stars and Stripes outside their homes and businesses in honor of Flag Day.

Our Pledge:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Do I Smell Peanut Butter and Chocolate?

Saturday, June 12, 2010

According to the National Food Holiday Calendar, tomorrow is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day. I wouldn't want anyone to be left out of the yummy goodness, so here's a recipe for delicious PB and Chocolate Chip Cookies to help you celebrate.

Peanut Butter Cookies
From the Magnolia Bakery Cookbook

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup peanut butter at room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup peanut butter chips
1/2 cup chocolate chips

For sprinkling: 1 tablespoon sugar, regular or superfine

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the flour, the baking soda, the baking powder, and the salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat the butter and the peanut butter together until fluffy. Add the sugars and beat until smooth. Add the egg and mix well. Add the milk and the vanilla extract. Add the flour mixture and beat thoroughly. Stir in the peanut butter and chocolate chips. Place sprinkling sugar — the remaining tablespoon — on a plate. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls into the sugar, then onto ungreased cookie sheets, leaving several inches between for expansion. Using a fork, lightly indent with a crisss-cross pattern, but do not overly flatten cookies. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Do not overbake. Cookies may appear to be underdone, but they are not.

Cool the cookies on the sheets for 1 minute, then remove to a rack to cool completely.

Aloha Friday

Friday, June 11, 2010

Greetings bloggy friends! I hope today finds you well.
My question today is simple: How long have you been blogging/reading blogs?

My Answer: I've been blogging since April 2008 with lots of ups and downs. I really hit my stride last summer and my stats went way up. I felt giddy. But it was rather short-lived as my family and homeschooling responsibilities were difficult to keep up with while I devoted all that time to blogging. Lately my blogging has been put on the back burner, and my blog is limping along. How I wish there were more hours in the day...but for now, I have to focus on my families' needs and settle for blogging occasionally. How about you?

Be sure to visit An Island Life for more Aloha Friday Fun. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

Get creative, let your imagination soar, let the kids have fun expressing themselves.
